UCO Original Candle Lantern: Why this old-school light still makes sense
A collapsible candle lantern is almost the definition of AVA technology: direct, understandable and useful without batteries, software or a network.
Strong fit for the AVA shelf
The UCO Original Candle Lantern is not a replacement for a bright LED lantern. It is a complementary backup: quiet area light with a long-duration consumable fuel source and very little technological dependency. Its repairable glass chimney and replaceable candles also make it more maintainable than many sealed electronic products.
Why AVA likes it
The Original collapses to about 4.25 inches high, extends to about 6.5 inches, and weighs about 6.4 ounces with a candle. UCO's current kit includes two long-burning candles, a reflector and a protective case. The spring-loaded candle tube maintains the flame position as the candle burns.

Where it earns its place
Think bedside backup, storm kit, cabin, RV or campsite—not high-output task lighting. The attraction is that a stored candle does not need to be topped off every few months and the lantern's operation is immediately understandable.
What we would change
A flame is inherently less forgiving than an LED. The lantern becomes hot, produces combustion by-products and requires supervision. It also cannot compete with modern LED lanterns for raw light output. That makes it a secondary light source rather than the only emergency light in a household.
Consumables and repairability
UCO sells paraffin, beeswax and citronella replacement candles for the Original, and replacement glass chimneys are available separately. That matters to AVA: a broken piece of glass does not automatically turn the entire product into waste.
Safety
Never leave a burning candle unattended, keep the lantern away from flammable materials and children or pets, and follow UCO's instructions regarding placement and ventilation. Let the lantern cool before handling or storing it.
Bottom line
Simple enough to understand. Useful enough to keep. Independent enough to belong at AVA.
